Halloween - Choose Your Own Adventure!

Halloween, the 'choose your own adventure', franchise. This film franchise (as of my writing this in November 2022) has thirteen entries and basically soft (or hard) reboots itself about every decade.
The original film came out in 1978. The sequel, Halloween II, came out in 1981. The third, Season of the Witch, an anthology, was released in 1982. Well, Season of the Witch did not go over well with audiences.
So! Reboot time! Bring Michael Myers back, one might say he Returns, in 1988. The Sequel to the soft reboot, Revenge, came out in 1989. And the sequel to that, Curse, came out in 1995. Turns out the audience was not ready for cults.
That's ok. Hard cut back to the original sequel and make another third film in H20 in 1998. H20 got a sequel, Resurrection, in 2002. Not much can be done after Resurrection... guess it should have been called Extinction.
So, Rob Zombie remakes the OG film in 2007. It actually got a sequel unlike all the other major horror franchises in 2009. The sequel, Halloween 2, didn't make much in the box office... also Michael died... so...
Alright! Hard reboot back to the original film for the Blumhouse take in 2018 which got a trilogy. The first sequel, Kills, came out in 2021 and the last, the End, if you will, was released in 2022.

For those keeping up: the original came out in 1978, and the franchise has rebooted in: 1988, 1998, 2007 and 2018.

Keeping with the Original film's story - so not counting Season of the Witch or Rob Zombie's remakes - here is  my best effort at a timeline breakdown. All this time math gets so complicated.

Halloween '78
Halloween II
Thorn Trilogy
Laurie Sequels
Blumhouse
Remake

Let’s untangle the timeline...

Halloween! The original! Opens in 1963 with six-year-old Michael Myers murdering his fifteen-year-old Judith Myers. After which, Michael is institutionalized in Smith’s Grove Sanitarium under the care of Dr. Sam Loomis. He sits and waits for fifteen years.

October 30-31st 1978 - Michael escapes from Smith’s Grove Sanitarium to return home to Haddonfield, IL where he goes on a killing spree... focusing on the Wallace then Doyle households after spotting seventeen-year-old Laurie Strode dropping a key off for her realtor father at the old, abandoned, Myers house where he was hiding out. After murdering Annie Brackett (daughter of Sheriff Leigh Brackett), Bob Simms, and Lynda Van der Klok, in the Wallace house, Michael crosses the street to attack Laurie at the Doyle house. To save Laurie from being strangled by Michael, Dr. Loomis shoots him and Michael falls out of a second story window and gets away... Thus concludes John Carpenter’s 1978, Halloween.

Now from here we have two sequels... we can continue the same night with Halloween II or bounce to forty years later to Halloween 2018. For the sake of our linear understanding of time let's just do the original Halloween II.

The original Halloween II was released in 1981 but picks up that same night of October 31st 1978 in Haddonfield, IL.
Dr. Loomis is still out looking for Michael, who is continuing on his killing spree to Haddonfield Memorial Hospital where Laurie was taken. So Michael kills more people. Laurie once again escapes his clutches, and Dr. Loomis once again shoots Michael. They blows them both up... don’t worry they live. Simple slasher plot. Great kills. Lance Guest is in it. But not much to say. November first arrives and our girl Laurie live. Yay.

From here we can go with Halloween 4: Return of Michael Myers with little Jamie Lloyd the daughter of Laurie who was killed off, or we can skip over to H20, with Laurie and her son John twenty years later. Again for the sake of our temporal existence we’ll just move on the the Thorn Trilogy which is comprised of Halloween 4, 5, and 6, or Returns, Revenge, and Curse, and spans from 1988 until 1995 where it abruptly ends...

Chapter 4: Return of Michael Myers, the third chapter in this series, takes place in 1988. We’re now following eight-year-old Jamie Lloyd, the orphaned daughter of Laurie Strode who died in November 1987-ish. She’s been adopted by Richard and Darlene Carruthers, who already have a seventeen-year-old daughter Rachael.
Michael has been in a coma, institutionalized in Ridgemont Federal Sanitarium, for the past ten years. He’s being transferred back to Smith’s Grove Sanitarium when a paramedic mentions he has a living niece, Jamie, which causes Michael to wake up and wreak havoc on the Ambulance.
Michael returns to Haddonfield to find Jamie and kill some townsfolk, with Dr. Loomis still right on his heels! Rachael is babysitting Jamie while Michael kills a bunch of people in town. Some towns folk form a mob and try to find him but kill an innocent guy... RIP Ted Hollister. They do end up saving Jamie and Rachael after the Haddonfield police totally failed... as always. It ends with the State Troopers, Sheriff Meeker, and some of the Haddonfield Mob: shooting and throwing grenades at Michael who escaped, very injured, down a hill and into a stream... floating downstream to the next movie.
The film concludes with Jamie stabbing her step mother Darlene Carruthers in a clown costume and Dr. Loomis screaming "no" because the cycle of evil continues! in chapter 5!

Chapter 5: Revenge of Michael Myers was released and takes place a year after Returns: 1989. Just kidding the cycle of evil did not continue!
Jamie is a patient in Haddonfield Children’s Clinic. She’s non-verbal, traumatized, and has a psychic link to her uncle Michael. Dr. Loomis is one of her doctors which is totally ethical. He's a very concerned and engaged mental health professional. Naw, he’s totally unhinged and using this poor nine-year-old girl.
Michael wakes up on Halloween after being comatose for a year in a... shaft? Being looked after by a homeless man...? He sets off to killing more of the Haddonfield’s populace while Jamie is mentally witnessing it. Michael even kills Jamie’s step sister Rachael and another dog, Max.
Dr. Loomis uses Jamie to lure Michael home to the Myers house where, after further traumatizing Jamie, he traps Michael and tries to kill him... but he has a stroke. The police tranquilize and arrest Michael. They take the still masked Michael and Jamie to the Haddonfield police station...
Where! The mysterious man in a black trench coat shows up and opens gun fire! The Man in Black killed (by my count) seven Haddonfield deputies and Sheriff Meeker, he releases Michael and takes him and Jamie... right into the next movie! Go to chapter six to see what happens on the next exciting episode of Halloween!

Chapter 6: Curse of Michael Myers was released and takes place in 1995, six years afterRevenge. This chapter was revised in the second edition of the book...
This chapter opens on Oct 30th 1995... with fifteen-year-old Jamie trying to escape from the Smith’s Grove Sanitarium underground with her newborn son Stephen... who might also be the son of Jamie’s uncle, Michael... yeah... moving on... Michael and Jamie have been held for the past six years under Smith’s Grove Sanitarium by a cult known as the Cult of the Thorn lead by Dr. Loomis’ boss, The Man in Black himself, Dr.Wynn. Sense, this does make sense.
Halloween 1995 Michael is once again on the loose in Haddonfield with Dr. Loomis after him.  Once again Michael is going back to the Myers house, he just wants to go home... but someone is living there. The Strode family, brother to Laurie’s adoptive father Morgan. John and Debra with their son Tim, daughter Kara, and her son Danny. Tommy Doyle, the little boy Laurie was babysitting in the first film, is now about twenty-five and living across the street from the Myers house... waiting for Michael to come home. And his paranoia paid off! Well he didn’t save John, Debra, Tim or his girlfriend Beth but he did save Stephen, Kara, and Danny... so there is that! The end of the film sees the Thorn Cult, Tommy, Kara, Danny, Stephen, Loomis, and Michael all at Smith’s Grove Sanitarium for a show down. The Cult is trying to make Danny the new Michael and transfer the mark of the thorn... I think...? Depending on the version you watch... Tommy, Kara, Danny and Stephen all get away never to be seen again. Dr. Loomis either takes over Dr. Wynn’s role as the leader of the Cult or he is killed... and something mysterious happens to Michael. We’ll never know because this is where this timeline ends.

Please return to Chapter Two for the Laurie Sequels!

After Halloween II we can jump to twenty years later to continue Laurie’s story in H20 in 1998.
Chapter 7: H20. A now thirty-seven-year-old Laurie is going by Keri Tate, the headmistress of a boarding school Hillcrest Academy in northern California. She lives with her seventeen-year-old John Tate and is doing her best to raise him, date the school counselor, and teach while coping with her trauma, nightmares, and mild alcoholism...
On Oct 29th 1998 Michael randomly breaks into Dr. Loomis’ hold house, I guess he left it to Nurse Marion Chambers after he passed...? After killing her and some teenagers he takes off after Laurie’s son John. He arrives at the school on Halloween and kills some of John’s friends. Laurie sends John and his girlfriend Molly off... they drive all the way out of the franchise... She remains to confront her fate, her monster, her brother... Michael! They have an epic battle which ends with her steeling an ambulance with him int he back, purposefully crashing it, and decapitating him. What a great ending!

But if you’d like you can continue on to see what would happen if this storyline continues, but I must warn you... it gets pretty hairy...

Chapter 8: Resurrection picks up two years after H20 in 2001. Michael shows up at Grace Anderson Sanitarium in California where Laurie is a patient. Retcon time! Laurie didn’t decapitate Michael in 1998, she took off the head of a paramedic that Michael put his mask on...Michael might be the ultimate foresight mastermind. Either way Laurie sets up a trap for him but winds up dying herself. Michael finally killed Laurie 10.31.01. She was thirty-nine.
What was he doing from 1998 to 2001 who knows? What was he doing from 1978 to 1998 we don’t know. This timeline has zero details.
What we do know is after Michael killed Laurie he returns to his home in Haddonfield IL. The next year, in 2002...
Busta Rhymes decides to film a reality show in the Myers house. The premise: a bunch of college kids will spend Halloween night in the Myers house... yay exploitation! Michael kills a bunch of people who broke into his house. Man, just leave the dude alone. Busta Rhymes kicks Michael into some cords and electrocutes him and says: “Trick or treat motha fucka.”

And thus endith this timeline because where do you go from there?

Please return to Chapter One! For the Blumhouse Trilogy!

Chapter 9: Halloween 2018, which goes all the way back to the Original Night He Came Home, Halloween 1978 and ignores everything else. It picks up forty years after that night in 2018 with a heavily traumatized fifty-seven-year-old Laurie Strode who has a strained relationship with her daughter Karen and wants to connect to her granddaughter Allyson.
Meanwhile, the plot... evil podcasters Aaron and Dana go to Smith’s Grove Sanitarium and show a now sixty-one-year-old Michael Myers his mask... for... reasons....? And talk to his doctor, Sartain. Exploitation makes a come back! Michael escapes from a prison transport... Dr. Sartain is apparently evil and helps him... this all sounds familiar. Either way it’s Halloween and Michael Myers is on the lose killing the townsfolk of Haddonfield once again after forty years, once again after fifteen years...
Anyway through a very contrived plot Michael and Laurie face off again but with less familial baggage and they do some damage! In the end Laurie sets her house, and Michael trapped inside the basement, on fire and fleas with her daughter and granddaughter to the hospital to get medical attention...
To find out what happens next go to Chapter Ten!

Chapter 10: Kills was released in 2021, but picks up the same Halloween night of 2018...
Laurie spends the duration of this entry in the hospital, don’t worry you’re not back in Halloween II, this franchise is just getting repetitive. Her daughter Karen is there freaking out and not really mourning the loss of her husband who died in the previous film. Allyson goes off to hunt after Michael who breaks out of the flaming house and kills so many people.
Some of the Haddonfield’s townsfolk form a mob, again it’s ok you haven’t accidentally flipped back to Chapter 4: Returns. Again, just really repetitive. Some of the Mob includes Lonnie Elam, Tommy Doyle, Lindsey Wallace, and Nurse Marion Chambers all from the first film. As well as people from the previous chapters who aren’t important because they all get killed off in this one.
This entry has the highest kill count. Michael even kills Karen.
In the end Allyson, Laurie, and Michael, and Deputy Frank Hawkins survive...
Turn to Chapter Eleven! to see where this story goes...

See below...

Chapter 11: Ends! I doubt it ends but that’s what it’s called. Ends was released and takes place in 2022.
This entry opens one year after Kills in 2019. Corey Cunningham is babysitting Jeremy Allen. Unfortunately there is a wild and violent accident which results in Jeremy’s death. The town of Haddonfield blames and ostracizes Corey...
Four years after Michael murdered Laurie’s daughter, she’s moved into a new house and is playing perfect 50’s cookie-cutter mom to her orphaned granddaughter Allyson, who is now a nurse... way to go her...
Michael has been living in a sewer... and no one has found him... in four years... in a small town... right ok he’s living in a sewer and is very weak.
Some Haddonfield High Marching Band kids have been bullying Corey... Marching Band? Ok. Through this bullying Corey meets Laurie who introduces him to Allyson. They start trauma bonding. Whoops I mean dating. They start dating. The Marching Band kids throw Corey off a bridge which leads him to meet Michael and... make eyes contact with him... which... does... something... Logic has left the visual medium. Michael shows Corey how to kill, helps him kill, them Corey steels his mask and goes on his own killing spree which ends in him confronting Laurie where he takes his own life. So that happened. Michael shows up and Laurie and Michael finally have a showdown again, again, again, again, this time Laurie kills Michael... with Allyson’s help. Then he down gathers together to throw him into The Mangler. Laurie and Hawkins get a cute romantic moment. Don’t Fear the Reaper plays.

If you want to continue please go to the Revised Edition of the Halloween Franchise Book.

The remake of Halloween opens in 1990 with ten-year-old Michael Myers and his Rob Zombie-esque family, mom Debra, her boyfriend Ronnie, his sisters Judith (sixteen) and Angel (baby)... Michael has a lot of problems.
Everything boils over and on Halloween he kills his sister, her boyfriend, Ronnie, and a bully. After this he is institutionalized at Smith’s Grove Sanitarium under the care of Dr. Loomis. Their relationship is explained as is the mistreatment of the patients at Smith’s Grove.
Two years later in 1992, Debra takes her life (she was thirty-six). Sheriff Leigh Brackett takes two-year-old Angel and puts her up for a closed adoption. She’s adopted by the Strode family.
Fifteen years later - Michael has been institutionalized for seventeen years. Now a giant, twenty-seven-year old man... he breaks free on Halloween night to go home to Haddonfield and find his little sister Laurie... and kill her friends. She survives but is heavily traumatized by the events of that night...
For more turn to chapter thirteen.

Chapter 13: Halloween II came out in 2009 and takes place in either 2008 or 2009 depending on which cut you view. So one to two years later... A traumatized Laurie is living with Sheriff Leigh Brackett and his daughter Annie who survived being attacked by Michael in the previous chapter. yay...
Laurie learns through Dr. Loomis’ exploitative book that she is actually the sister of Michael. And she freaks out... like really freaks out. Michael kills some people. Walks around. Sees the ghost of his mother. Ya know, as ya do.
It ends with Laurie (nineteen), Michael (twenty-nine), and Dr Loomis locked in a cabin or shed together with the police surrounding it. Depending on what cut you watch either all three of them die or Loomis and Michael are killed and Laurie survives and is institutionalized...
Well Sheriff Brackett lived so that’s great.
Thus concludes the remake timeline.
Also the book... for now...

Halloween '78
Halloween II

Blumhouse
Remake
TOTAL!
Family Tree(s)
Myers v Strodes
Thorn Trilogy
Laurie Sequels
Blumhouse

The Halloween Franchise begins and hinges on Michael Myers killing his sister Judith on Halloween night of 1963. Michael was 6-years-old meaning he was likely born in October 1957. We see on Judith's headstone that she was born November 10th 1947, meaning she died less than two weeks before her Sweet Sixteen.
Their parents are Peter and Edith Myers - or that's what the Fandom.Wiki says.

In Halloween II another level of scandal is added to the Myers family. It's revealed that Laurie Strode, the survivor from the first film is actually Michael's little sister. It's widely considered Edith and Peter died in a car accident in 1965, after which Laurie was given up for a closed adoption and taken in by the Strode family.
Laurie is 17-years-old in 1978 when she was attacked by Michael, meaning she was likely born in 1961. This means she was about 4-years-old when her biological parents died.

Laurie was adopted by (or was their biological daughter in the Blumhouse timeline) Pamela and Morgan Strode. Morgan Strode a realtor for Strode Realty in Haddonfield, Il. I have often wonder what happened to them after the events of Halloween II... because it does not seem like they were there at all for Laurie in any timeline.

In Halloween 6: Curse of Michael Myers we meet more of the Strode Family. Morgan's brother John, who is also a realtor. John's brother Debra, their son Tim, their daughter Kara, and her son Danny.
Kara was likely born around 1973, Tim around 1977, and Danny around 1989-ish.

Laurie has a child in ever timeline : (for more information go to that tab)
- In the Thorn Trilogy she has Jamie
- In the Laurie Sequels she has John
- In the Blumhouse Trilogy she has Karen

In the Thorn Trilogy - comprised of Halloween 4, 5, 6, or Returns, Revenge + Curse - Laurie was killed off screen in a car accident in November of 1987.
She had a daughter Jamie Lloyd likely born in 1980. Her father is unknown, but many headcannon that it's the paramedic Jimmy from Halloween II.

Jamie was adopted by Darlene and Richard Carruthers, who have a 17-year-old daughter Rachel.

Jamie is killed in 1995 at 15-years-old, after giving birth to a son Stephen who is adopted by Tommy Doyle and Kara Strode.

The Laurie Sequels are comprised of H20 and Resurrection. In H20 it's revealed Laurie has a son John Tate, who was born August of 1981.

John's father is unknown but some headcannon that it's Tom Atkin's character, Nick Castle, from The Fog and that Jamie Lee Curtis' character is really Laurie Strode in her years on the run.

John survives the seventh Halloween film and his character has never been mentioned again...

The Blumhouse Trilogy is Halloween 2018, Kills and Ends. In this retcon trilogy Laurie is biologically a Strode not a Myers.

Laurie has a daughter Karen, who was likely born in 1980 with an unknown man. Some headcannon that her father is Deputy Hawkins.

Karen married Ray Nelson and has her own daughter Allyson who was born around 2001.

* All this really happened?
